The question that I’ve asked myself lately is what type of warm-up exercise or activity is appropriate prior to an on-field soccer training session? Should we have the athletes perform a dynamic warm-up that is isolating the different areas of the body? Should we have the athletes jog around the field and then static stretch? Should the athletes do a slow active movement that seems to stretch the areas associated with the particular movement (e.g., lunge with arms overhead to isolate hip-flexor complex)? Should we play a game of tag? Why not just start playing the first activity on the menu of training exercises for that particular training session?

Do these young kids conduct a thorough dynamic warm-up prior to playing tag or do the self-monitor and actualize to the environment? Food for thought which may stimulate a discussion on how productive or unproductive our warm-up/preparation is prior to training.
